This year is already starting out as a great one! We look forward to a fun and rewarding competition season with our new and returning families.
August:
Academy Competition Dance Camp – Camp was fantastic! The dancers really enjoyed themselves and learned their dances very quickly. Thank you for coming early and staying late. That was a huge help in finishing choreography.
Academy annual picnic – Thank you those of you who came and danced! As always, it was a great time.
Dance session – Classes have started out fantastic!
1.Due to the number of students, and teacher recommendation we are adding an Intermediate 1 class. There will be an Intermediate 1A and an Intermediate 1B. They will take place at the same time on Tuesday evenings in separate rooms. Please be sure to pick up your envelope at the front desk with details on where you child will be.
2.The Academy will be closed on Monday, September 6 in observance of Labor Day.
3.Ballet class looked fantastic with everyone in the appropriate attire! Remember attire is black leotard, pink tights, ballet shoes and hair in a bun.
Solo costumes – August 31
1.If you have not had a chance to speak with Suzanne about costumes please make an appointment to do so.
2.An extension date to Friday, September 10 has been given to get costume sketches to Wanda.
September:

1.Whitney and Shelby will teach the choreography on Friday, September 3 from 5:00-6:30pm.
2.The competition practice time will be on Thursday’s at 5:00 in the tower room.
Extra September Saturday practice – September 4
1.We will not have practice this Saturday. Enjoy your holiday weekend!
Solo Choreography complete – September 15
1.Check with your solo choreographer to be sure you are on the same page. Solo’s are to be finished by Wednesday, September 15.
October:
Extra October Saturday Practice – October 2
1.Plan for rehearsal on this Saturday. Schedule will be released next week.
Solo Showcase – October 3
1.Solos and duets will perform their dances in full costume and make-up.
2.Showcase will take place at the Academy at 3:00pm.
3.Non-soloists are encouraged to come watch and cheer on their fellow teammates.
Bonkers night – October 8
1.Tina Greim is heading this.
Parade Practices – October 7, 14 and 21
1.Practices will be 5:30-6:30. In the team policies it says 5:30-7 but that is a typo.
2.Competition classes will still take place but will be 15 minutes on these nights. Watch for schedule.
Homecoming Parade – October 23
1.Time is TBD. Plan on 8:00am arrival time for parade but that is subject to change.
2.All competition students will march in the parade.
Halloween spirit Attire – October 28
1.Plan to send the dancers in fun Halloween costumes or attire! Be sure they are not distracting and are forgiving to movement and dancing. Have fun and be creative with this.
2.Awards will be given for the most creative, most elaborate and any other award teachers feel is appropriate. Teachers will vote and awards will be given that night.
3.Spirit nights are a fun way to celebrate while dancing. They are not required.
NATIONAL COMPETITION CHANGE:
1.Please note due to CPS High School Graduation Hall of Fame Dance Challenge has been moved to May 7-8 and will be in St Louis at the Gateway Center. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Apparel:
1.Warm-ups
a.Warm up sizes will be here next Thursday. Please have your child try on the jacket and pants and sign up for what size you want to order.
b.You will need to indicate if you would like your child’s first or last name on the front of the jacket.
c.Warm-ups will be ordered September 15 and should arrive before the October booster meeting.
2.T-Shirts
a.Suzanne has been in contact with flying cow. Looks as if cost will be similar to last year.
b.There will be 2 styles of shirts with the same design to choose from.
3.Academy leotard-Cost for leotards is $50. Sign up tonight if you need a new one. These will be ordered on September 15. 50% is due at the time of ordering.
4.Tops/Shorts-Suzanne is working with flying cow on designs for these.

August 2010 Booster Note & Team Polices
We understand that being a member of our competition team is a commitment and dedication, that’s why we work harder every year to make our competition program the very best it can be! If you have additional questions, please let us know!

Our primary method of communication with competition team parents is by email. We communicate often regarding upcoming events, announcements, scheduling, etc. Accordingly, all competition team parents must provide an email address to us that they check regularly for emails from the Academy Competition Team. Please be sure that this is an email that you can receive non-work related emails on.
All AFA dance competition emails will come from AFACompteam@yahoo.com. We will ask that if you would like to send out a group announcement that you send an email with the announcement to AFACompteam@yahoo.com. We will then take care of sending out the announcement. We will try to send no more than one email a day and try our best to at least give 24 hour notice on turn around.
All correspondence about the Academy of Fine Arts Dance not related to competition will come from the academycastle@aol.com. We will follow the same process as stated above.
In addition, all notes, pictures, etc will be posted on the Competition Team Blog at www.afacompetition.blogspot.com, we will update regularly with important information.
Booster Club:
The Booster Club is the fundraising arm of the Academy Competition Team. This club is headed under the direction of Sherry and Suzanne Wendling and run by the parents of the competition students. This group is separate from the AFA competition team and the Academy of Fine Arts. This group will meet the first Thursday of each month at 6:00pm.

Instructional Class Requirements:
These classes are fundamental in teaching dancers the proper foundations of all dances and in strengthening them so that they can perform and execute moves in a manner that is technically correct. Ballet technique class will focus on the fundamentals of the classical ballet, including proper ballet positions, body alignment and technique. Jazz technique class is focused on strengthening dancers with targeted stretches and exercises, as well as focusing on proper technique for leaps, turns, and other integral dance moves incorporated into the competition routines. Tap class is focused on strengthening dancers with targeted exercises to help loosen their ankles and improve their sound articulation and footwork. We will also focus on expanding their tap vocabulary and exposing the dancers to different rhythms and styles of tap. Lyrical combo is a class required by anyone competing in a competition lyrical dance and optional for any other students. Lyrical focuses on using emotion within a specific style of dance. Technique class is a class solely focused on the proper technique of each dance move and the proper placement of lets, feet, arms, hands and head.
Class Schedule:
The class schedule for competition dancers will be finalized after camp and will be ready by August 9th.
Practice Attire:
All competition team dancers are expected to dress in full dancewear for every dance class. Competition team members are looked to as role models within the studio and should be dressed properly for all classes (hair pulled back for ALL classes and appropriate dancewear, dance SHOES for all classes, and clean tights with no holes or runs). Please note, this year Academy will follow a strict studio-wide dress code for ballet and competition classes. We feel this creates a more professional learning environment for our students.
Ballet: Black Leotard, pink tights, ballet skirt (optional), ballet shoes and hair in a bun.
Jazz/Technique/Lyrical: Any tight fitting dance attire and appropriate shoes.
Tap: Any tight fitting dance attire and tap shoes.
Competition Dance Practice: Black leotard or dance top with fitted shorts, tan tights and appropriate shoes. Hair pulled securely back off of the face.
Queen’s Closet:
We will place any orders for shoes, tights, etc. on the 15th of each month. There is a notebook at the front desk for ordering Queen’s Closet items; a 50% deposit must be placed on all orders when ordering. Unless an item is on backorder, they will be in within 2 weeks.
Attendance Policy:
A strong attendance record is required of our competition team members.
Regular attendance is essential and mandatory. Students may not miss any of their regularly scheduled classes/choreography the week before competition. Missing the week before competition may result in forfeiting your chance to compete in the dance competition. A few exceptions will be made for school grades or family emergencies if Sherry or Suzanne have plenty of advanced warning and agrees to excuse the absence.
If you miss a regular class, please plan to make this class up in the following 2 weeks. If you miss competition class, please understand you may be asked to make this up with a private at your cost.
All dancers agree to practice, practice and practice some more. You, along with your teammates and teachers, will be pleased with the results.
Extra Practices:
Along with required attendance at weekly classes, there will be some mandatory extra practices throughout the dance year to work on our competition routines or prepare for other performances.
Extra Competition Classes (Interim):
These extra competition classes are used in-between the instructional dance class sessions to help us prepare for competition. These classes are an extra $5 per dance, per night. This will be billed in the month the classes take place. The schedule for these days will be as close to our Thursday schedule as possible. Please plan for the following Tuesday/Thursday dates:

**We may or may not need all competition dancers to be present on every Saturday listed above; we will try our best to give at least two weeks advance notice of which teams (if any) will need to be available for an extra Saturday rehearsal or performance.
The two Saturday above will be at NO COST to you – these are a complimentary service provided to our competition team so the dancers will be their very best when it comes time for competition!
Choreography Fees: Boosters has covered production and tap fees for everyone.
Competitions:
During the upcoming competition season, The Academy competition team will participate in one showcase, one convention, two regional competitions and the AFA annual recital. The three regional competitions will be during the months of January, February and March. Each of these regional competitions will be in either the Kansas City or St Louis area and is usually on Saturday and Sunday. Some solos, duets or trios might compete on Friday evenings. We will get the ready times to you as soon as we know the competition times but, please note, specific competition times for each competition are not posted until the week before the competition is to take place. There might be a time the dancers must be present at the competition on both days (Saturday & Sunday), other times, a dancer must only be present on one day or the other – it varies competition by competition. Things to keep in mind during the year:
• Students must attend all competitions their groups are entered.
• Students need to be prepared to stay for award ceremonies recognizing their dances. The only exceptions are from the teachers for late Sunday evening awards.
• Students need to arrive at competitions in their AFA jackets and spirit attire. These need to be worn over costumes at all times and on stage for awards.
• Dancers agree to practice, practice and practice some more. You, along with your teammates and teachers, will be pleased with the results.
• Competitions will usually post their schedules 1 week prior to the competition. A copy of the schedule will be posted in the studio.
• Dancers will be given a ready time for each dance. They should be dressed in costume, hair and make-up done, and fed by this time. This allows for stretching and running of the routine(s) before show time, minimizing stress on all.
• Suggested hotels for each competition will also be posted, however it is not necessary to all stay at the same place if you prefer a different hotel, with family or have other accommodations. We will not be making group reservations. Each person is responsible for their own.
• Academy will sell a practice CD for $5. The CD will contain all of the cut competition music for this season. This will be ready for pick up September 1st and charged to your booster account.
• When attending conventions and competitions, students and parents must behave in an appropriate manner. Poor sportsmanship, inappropriate attire, and being disrespectful to anyone (including other studios’ dancers and parents), is unacceptable. Please remember you are representing everyone at the Academy of Fine Arts.

National Competition:
This year we are headed to Las Vegas for nationals! We will be competing in the Hall of Fame Dance Challenge. The regional competition will be held in Overland Park, KS May 20-22, 2011 and the Nationals in Las Vegas, June 19-23, 2011. We need your final commitment and $200 deposit by January 6th, 2011. National Competition is OPTIONAL for those dancers who wish to attend and compete but strongly encouraged. There will be extra fundraisers for those attending to help with payments and competition cost. We will determine which dance groups will be competing in January based on dancer participation. National Entry Fees and summer tuition for rehearsals leading up to Nationals will be collected separately in 2 - 3 payments between February and April.
Competition Dance Shoes and Apparel:
We will know what color and style of shoe each dance needs by October 15th, 2010. This will be determined once competition costumes are finalized for each group. Competition shoes may only be worn on stage while competing. Only exception is for tap shoes.
We will also be placing orders for warm-ups, competition travel bags, apparel (t-shirts for dancer & parents, leotards, booty shorts, etc) during the September - November Booster Meetings. 50% of the total cost will be required at the time of ordering your apparel items.
Competition Costumes:
We will let you know what style of costumes will be worn for each dance by September 15th. Most of our team costumes are made by Wanda Koch. If you are a solo dancer please understand the group costumes are a huge undertaking and priority. Please have all solo dance costume sketches and ideas to Wanda before August 31st.
Stoning on Competition Costumes:
Each parent will be responsible for the stoning of their competition costumes. Each costume will be provided with a stone design and pictures will be posted on the Competition Team Blog. We ask that all stoning be completed by January 4th, 2011.
As time allows, Ms. Suzanne and some moms, will be offering to stone costumes for a fee of per gross of stones. Please make sure you communicate directly with them on this and plan ahead so all costumes are ready in January.
Solos/Duos/Trios:
All solos/duos/trios need to be approved by Mrs. Sherry or Ms. Suzanne. All soloists over 8 need to have competed in dance for 2 years at a minimum. Soloist under 8 wishing to compete must be approved by Sherry and Suzanne based on technique, attitude and maturity. 50% of the Academy Instructional Bill will need to be paid by September 1st, 2010 and the remaining balance by January 15th, 2011. Not all solos will compete at LA Dance Magic. Dancers will be chosen by seniority and competition ready dances. Those competing in solos or duets at LA Dance Magic need to have booster payments up-to-date and AFA bill paid in full by the December 1st. To compete a solo or duet in the February competition, your AFA bill needs to be paid in full by January 15th. Students are to be enrolled in a solo/duet/trio class provided by the Academy, and take 1 hour of private lessons a month. All solos/duets/trios choreography needs to be completed by September 15th. Soloist will perform their solos in the solo showcase on Sunday, October 3rd, 2010 at 3:00pm.

• When attending conventions and competitions, students and parents must behave in an appropriate manner. Poor sportsmanship, inappropriate attire, and being disrespectful to anyone (including other studios’ dancers and parents), is unacceptable. National Competition:
This year we are headed to Las Vegas for nationals! We will be competing in the Hall of Fame Dance Challenge. The regional competition will be held in Overland Park, KS May 20-22, 2011 and the Nationals in Las Vegas, June 19-23, 2011. We need your final commitment and $200 deposit by January 6th, 2011. National Competition is OPTIONAL for those dancers who wish to attend and compete but strongly encouraged. There will be extra fundraisers for those attending to help with payments and competition cost. We will determine which dance groups will be competing in January based on dancer participation. National Entry Fees and summer tuition for rehearsals leading up to Nationals will be collected separately in 2 - 3 payments between February and April.
Competition Dance Shoes and Apparel:
We will know what color and style of shoe each dance needs by October 15th, 2010. This will be determined once competition costumes are finalized for each group. Competition shoes may only be worn on stage while competing. Only exception is for tap shoes.
We will also be placing orders for warm-ups, competition travel bags, apparel (t-shirts for dancer & parents, leotards, booty shorts, etc) during the September - November Booster Meetings. 50% of the total cost will be required at the time of ordering your apparel items.
Competition Costumes:
We will let you know what style of costumes will be worn for each dance by September 15th. Most of our team costumes are made by Wanda Koch. If you are a solo dancer please understand the group costumes are a huge undertaking and priority. Please have all solo dance costume sketches and ideas to Wanda before August 31st.
Stoning on Competition Costumes:
Each parent will be responsible for the stoning of their competition costumes. Each costume will be provided with a stone design and pictures will be posted on the Competition Team Blog. We ask that all stoning be completed by January 4th, 2011.
As time allows, Ms. Suzanne and some moms, will be offering to stone costumes for a fee of per gross of stones. Please make sure you communicate directly with them on this and plan ahead so all costumes are ready in January.
Solos/Duos/Trios:
All solos/duos/trios need to be approved by Mrs. Sherry or Ms. Suzanne. All soloists over 8 need to have competed in dance for 2 years at a minimum. Soloist under 8 wishing to compete must be approved by Sherry and Suzanne based on technique, attitude and maturity. 50% of the Academy Instructional Bill will need to be paid by September 1st, 2010 and the remaining balance by January 15th, 2011. Not all solos will compete at LA Dance Magic. Dancers will be chosen by seniority and competition ready dances. Those competing in solos or duets at LA Dance Magic need to have booster payments up-to-date and AFA bill paid in full by the December 1st. To compete a solo or duet in the February competition, your AFA bill needs to be paid in full by January 15th. Students are to be enrolled in a solo/duet/trio class provided by the Academy, and take 1 hour of private lessons a month. All solos/duets/trios choreography needs to be completed by September 15th. Soloist will perform their solos in the solo showcase on Sunday, October 3rd, 2010 at 3:00pm.

January Showcase:
We appreciate you working with us even though it was cold. Once the dancers got going they were sweating and forgot about the temperature. A special thank you to the parents and students who arrived competition ready for the showcase. It is much appreciated when the dancers look professional.
LA Dance Magic:
LA Dance Magic was fantastic! I think we can all agree that it was a much improved performance over the showcase. Thank you, parents, for all of your support and working so hard to have the costumes stoned. They looked great on stage. The highest scoring dance for the Academy was Bingo followed by Butterflies. The ladies who made cuts for auditions were Sammie, Ally, Jacy, Cassie, Savannah, Gracie, Sydney D and Brittany. Dancers who received scholarships were Savannah, Sydney D and Brittany. Congratulations to all of our dancers for a job well done! **Thank you Mr. Fuller for copying the video and pictures from the competition**

Dancers are to arrive by 7:00am with first costume on, hair and make-up complete with warm-up on.
Hair is poof and pony for all competition dance and twirling numbers
Full competition make-up including eyelashes
There will be a welcome desk at the front. Please pick up your child’s folder prior to the competition. This will have their score sheets for the day, a program and any information you will need.
They day will go by very quick and smooth if we all chip in and do our part
Props will load tonight immediately following the booster meeting and unload on Saturday at 7:00am. They will reload immediately following the afternoon competition and the final unload will be on Monday at 6:30 and the Academy.
The order for 7:30am and noon competitions is attached. Please have costumes in order and organized to assist the competition in running smoothly.
Plan for the day to be 7:00am-4:00pm.

Buddy theme is ‘Picture Time!’ -picture frames, picture books..Get creative!
All costumes will be completed by this competition

January 16th - 17th
All competition students need to be in St. Louis early Friday evening.
Please remember this is a very long weekend, get students to bed as early as possible throughout the week and on Friday. We want to be our best this weekend!

Workshop Classes – They have added classes this year so we will get even more out of it! Unfortunately that means longer days.
Saturday: Meet at the bottom of the stairs at 7:00am, ready to dance, to receive your wristband. Everyone needs to be in black AFA attire and new bows (handed out on Thursday). You may wear AFA bra top, tank top, leotard and booty shorts. You may wear other black and white items with these. Just be sure you are in black and white!
**All Jumpstart and Junior girls need to wear hair in the pigtail buns, performance ready with lots of spray and new bows. (We hope this stays and then we will be ready for the competition).
**Seniors may wear hair as they wish as long as it is tidy with their new bow.
**Boys: Competition t-shirts with black warm up type pants or shorts
Saturday evening competition:
*Juniors arrive at 2:45. Dressed and ready in first costume. Eat dinner during your break and bring snacks for between dances.
*Seniors arrive for the competition with first costume, hair and make-up complete and warm up
This runs VERY quickly. Please arrive on time and have everything organized and ready.
Sunday: Meet at the bottom of the stairs at 6:30am to warm up for auditions. Feel free to wear something that will help you stand out! Hair is the same as Saturday.
The rooms are broken down by age. In the Jumpstart and Junior rooms there is an overlap in age. We have talked to those with the overlap individually about the best option for your child

Junior room: 7-11
Jumpstart: 8 and under
Auditions: All competitions students in Junior and Senior need to participate in these auditions Sunday morning. Please have your student at the bottom of the stairs dressed and ready for the auditions at 6:30am. We will warm up as a group. Auditions begin promptly at 7:00am. All students need competition ready hair, earrings, barrettes and or bows and minimal makeup.

The theme for this competition is ‘something fun that has to do with writing or coloring’
Please plan to bring the wrapped gift on Thursday and place in the box in the entrance way; Please be sure the To and From is very clear;

Have old shoes for practice. The carpet will eat them.
Have healthy snacks and a water bottle in the dancers bag.
Suggest bringing a cooler with your lunch, dinner (for Sat), and snacks. This will help avoid long lines
Have lunch their 15 mins prior to lunch. We will eat as a group and review our dances for the competition that evening
Encourage your dancer to stay close to the front of the room
All classes need to be attended by all students
Friday – Work to arrive and be in bed no later than 8. It is a very long weekend.

Competition Showcase
The showcase went very smoothly. Thank you for everyone that came with hair and make-up complete. As teachers, we have watched the video and are working on things that can be improved upon. Please keep in mind there are a lot of people putting in many hours to make our competition team the best it can be. We ask that you do the same when it comes to preparation for performances and competitions. The total cost for the Showcase is $350 for the building and heat.

Competition Showcase
The showcase went very smoothly. Thank you for everyone that came with hair and make-up complete. As teachers, we have watched the video and are working on things that can be improved upon. Please keep in mind there are a lot of people putting in many hours to make our competition team the best it can be. We ask that you do the same when it comes to preparation for performances and competitions. The total cost for the Showcase is $350 for the building and heat.

All correct shoes will be worn for every competition. Practice shoes of each style should be in the dancers bag to for practice

All make up including eyelashes and rhinestones are to be worn for every competition and performance.

The Holiday season is upon us and that means the next step is competition season! We appreciate everyone being flexible and working to make this a great year. As we get closer to competition season please remember things can get a little crazy but in the end it all pays off when you see those smiles and sparkles on stage. Here’s to a great December of stoning, stay positive!!
NOVEMBER

Please plan to have your dancer arrive at 8:30am at the side door, dressed in Academy warm up with Academy T-shirt, full makeup and hair, and have all their costumes organized by order in a bag.
An AFA team photo will be taken before the performance in warm ups.
Seating will be at 9:15. The lobby will be open while you wait. The showcase will begin at 9:30am.
Parents get to watch! There will be backstage helpers to assist in changing.

It is that time of the year that all students should have all competition dances completely memorized. It is now time to clean and polish dances to make sure they are competition ready. Please understand the teachers are working hard to make sure dances are ready and all changes are for the good of the team. If your child needs extra help please get with the teachers.

All competitor shoes should be paid for and tried on at this point. We will wear these for all performances and competitions from here on out beginning with the Holiday performance

The black/white tap shoes are the only shoes to be worn in class.

We are still looking for a white eye pencil to highlight brows and corner of eyes

Please remember this is a very long weekend, get them to bed as early as possible throughout the week and on Friday. We want to be our best this weekend!
No swimming at the hotels
Workshop Classes – They have added classes this year so we will get even more out of it! Unfortunately that means longer days.
Saturday: Meet at the bottom of the stairs at 7:00am, ready to dance, to receive your wristband. Everyone needs to be in black AFA attire, you may where the bra top, tank top, leotard and booty shorts. Just be sure you are in black and white! All Jumpstart and Junior girls need to wear hair in the pigtail buns, performance ready with lots of spray. (We hope this stays and then we will be ready for the competition). Seniors may wear hair as they wish as long as it is tidy.
Saturday night competition: This runs VERY quickly. Please arrive on time (we will give the exact time as it gets closer) and have everything organized and ready to use.
Sunday: Meet at the bottom of the stairs at 6:30am to warm up for auditions. Feel free to wear something that will help you stand out! Hair is the same as Saturday.
The rooms are broken down by age. In the Jumpstart and Junior rooms there is an overlap in age. We will be talking to those with the overlap individually about the best option for your child
Senior room: 12 and over
Junior room: 7-11
Jumpstart: 8 and under
Auditions
All competitions students ages 7 and older need to participate in these auditions Sunday morning. Please have your student at the bottom of the stairs dressed and ready for the auditions at 6:30am. We will warm up as a group. Auditions begin promptly at 7:00am. All students need competition ready hair, earrings, barrettes and or bows and minimal makeup.

Everyone needs to be in black AFA attire, you may where the bra top, tank top, leotard and booty shorts. Just be sure you are in black and white! All Jumpstart and Junior girls need to wear hair in the pigtail buns, performance ready with lots of spray. (We hope this stays and then we will be ready for the competition). Seniors may wear hair as they wish as long as it is tidy.
Saturday night competition: This runs VERY quickly. Please arrive on time (we will give the exact time as it gets closer) and have everything organized and ready to use.
Sunday: Meet at the bottom of the stairs at 6:30am to warm up for auditions. Feel free to wear something that will help you stand out! Hair is the same as Saturday.
The rooms are broken down by age. In the Jumpstart and Junior rooms there is an overlap in age. We will be talking to those with the overlap individually about the best option for your child

Junior room: 7-11
Jumpstart: 8 and under
Auditions
All competitions students ages 7 and older need to participate in these auditions Sunday morning. Please have your student at the bottom of the stairs dressed and ready for the auditions at 6:30am. We will warm up as a group. Auditions begin promptly at 7:00am. All students need competition ready hair, earrings, barrettes and or bows and minimal makeup.

It is that time of the year that all students should have all competition dances completely memorized. It is now time the time of the year we have to clean and polish dances to make sure they are competition ready. Please understand the teachers are working hard to make sure dances are ready and all changes are for the good of the team. If your student needs extra help please get with the teachers.

Stones for all Costumes:
Stone orders will be placed tonight. We have the new process in place!
Each costume was assigned an amount by gross in size 20 or 30.
As an addition to the stones you order, we ask every student to order an additional 1 gross 20’s and 1 gross 30’s for miscellaneous costume belongings (earrings, chokers, bows, belt buckles) and any stones that might get lost.
A great way to stand out and, is a lot of fun for the girls, is to stone their tops, shirts, leo’s and warm-ups. If you would like to do so please order an extra gross for these projects.
Props:
We need a parent to volunteer to be in charge of each of the following props. The role will involve working with the teacher to get the props ready for competition. Then checking the prop the Thursday before the competition and the Thursday after the competition. This will ensure the props stays in good shape.

We are off to a great start for this year! We appreciate all the positivity and energy from all the families and kids. We would not be here without all of you! We encourage you to continue embrace any new changes with us…open minds will lead us to new places!! This will be a great year!!

Academy of Fine Arts Competition Team Policies
We understand that being a member of our competition dance teams is a commitment and a dedication – that’s why we are working extra hard year after year to make our competition program the very best! If you have additional questions please let us know.

All of the Academy teaching staff is very excited about the upcoming competitive year. Questions and concerns may arise so please feel free to contact Whitney or Suzanne for further information.

Our primary method of communication with competition team parents is by email. We communicate often regarding upcoming events, announcements, scheduling, etc. Accordingly, all competition team parents must provide an email address to us that they check regularly for emails from The Academy Competition Team. Please be sure that this is an email that you can receive non-work related emails on.
All AFA dance competition emails will come from AFACompteam@yahoo.com. We will ask that if you would like to send out a group announcement that you send an email with the announcement to AFACompteam@yahoo.com. We will then take care of sending out the announcement. We will try to send no more than one email a day and try our best to at least give 24 hour notice on turn around.
All correspondence about the Academy of Fine Arts Dance not related to competition will come from the academycastle@aol.com . We will follow the same process as stated above.
In addition, we have a “Competition Team Blog” that we update with important information regarding booster club updates.
Booster Club:
The Booster Club is the fundraising arm of the Academy Competition Team. This club is run by the parents of the competition students. This group is separate from the AFA competition team and the Academy of Fine Arts.
More information on Booster Club will be provided in the first meeting. This group will meet once a month.
Instructional Class Requirements :
These classes are fundamental in teaching dancers the proper foundations of all dance and in strengthening them so that they can perform and execute moves in a manner that is technically correct. Ballet technique class will focus on the fundamentals of classical ballet, including proper ballet positions, body alignment and technique. Jazz technique class is focused on strengthening dancers with targeted stretches and exercises, as well as focusing on proper technique for leaps, turns, and other integral dance moves incorporated into the competition routines. Tap class is focused on strengthening dancers with targeted exercises to help loosen their ankles and improve their sound articulation and footwork. We will also focus on expanding their tap vocabulary and exposing the dancers to different rhythms and styles of tap.
Class Schedule:
The class schedule for competition dancers will be finalized after auditions and will ready August 15th.
Practice Attire:
All competition team dancers are expected to dress in full dancewear for every dance class. Competition team members are looked to as role models within the studio and should be dressed properly for all classes (hair pulled back for ALL classes and appropriate dancewear and dance SHOES for all classes). Please note, again this year Academy will follow a studio-wide dress code for competition dancers, as well as non-competition dancers. We feel this creates a more
professional learning environment for our students.
Ballet: Leotard, tights, ballet skirt (optional) and ballet shoes
Jazz/Technique/ Lyrical: Any tight fitting clothing over a leotard and appropriate shoes
Tap: Any tight fitting clothing over a leotard and tap shoes
Competition Dance Practice: Black Leotard and tights -You may wear black tight fitted shorts as well
Attendance Policy:
Good attendance is required of our Competition Team Members.
Regular attendance is essential and mandatory. Students may not miss any of their regularly scheduled classes/choreography the week before competition. Some exceptions will be made if the teacher has plenty of advanced warning and agrees to excuse the absence.
If you miss a regular class please plan to make this class up in the following 2 weeks. If you miss competition class, please understand you may be asked to make this up with a private at your cost.
All dancers agree to practice, practice and practice some more. You, along with your teammates and teachers, will be pleased with the results.
Extra Practices:
Along with required attendance at weekly classes, there will be some mandatory extra practices throughout the dance year to work on our competition routines or prepare for other performances.
Extra Choreography Classes:
We are asking ALL competition team members to mark the following Saturdays on your calendars as a possible rehearsal/choreography day:

**We may or may not need all competition dancers to be present on every Saturday listed above -we will try our best to give at least two weeks advance notice of which teams (if any) will need to be available for an extra Saturday rehearsal or performance.
These two Saturdays above would be at NO COST to our competition teams – these are a complimentary service provided to our competition teams so that they will be their very best when it comes time for competition!
Extra Competition Classes:
These extra competition classes are used in between the dance class sessions or to help us prepare for competition. These classes are an extra $5 per dance. This will be billed to you in the month the classes will take place. The schedule for these days will be as close to our Thursday schedule as possible. Please plan for the following dates:

Competitions:
During the upcoming competition season, The Academy competition teams will participate in one convention, 4 regional competitions and one national competition. The three regional competitions will be during the months of Feb -May. Each of these regional competitions is usually within the Kansas City or St. Louis area and is usually on Saturday and Sunday (sometimes there may be Friday evening times). The specific competition times for each competition are no t posted until the week before the competition. Sometimes dancers must be present at the competition on both days (Saturday & Sunday), other times, a dancer must only be present on one day or the other – it varies competition by competition.
· Students must attend all competitions their groups are entered
· All students need to be prepared to stay for all award ceremonies. The only exceptions are from the teachers for late Sunday evening awards
· All students need to arrive at competition in their AFA jackets. These need to be worn over costumes at all times and on stage for awards.
· All dancers agree to practice, practice and practice some more. You, along with your teammates and teachers, will be pleased with the results.
· Competitions will usually post their schedules 1 week prior to the competition. A copy of the schedule will be posted in the studio. All dancers must be at a competition, dressed with makeup and hair done, at least set ready time, this is usually two hours before your scheduled time. This allows for stretching and running of the routine(s) before show time, minimizing stress on all.
· Suggested hotels for each competition will also be posted, however it is not necessary to all stay at the same place if you prefer a different hotel or have other accommodations. We will not be making group reservations. Each person is responsible for themselves
· Academy will sell a practice CD for $5. The CD will contain all of the competition music for this season. This will be ready for purchase Oct. 15th
· When attending conventions and competitions, students and parents must behave in an appropriate manner. Poor sportsmanship, inappropriate attire, and being disrespectful to anyone (including other studios' dancers and parents), is unacceptable. Please remember you are representing everyone at the Academy of Fine Arts.

National Competition:
This year we are looking at Showbiz National Competition in Kansas City, July 3-7, 2010. This National Competition is OPTIONAL for those dancers who wish to attend and compete. We will determine which dancers would like to participate in Nationals, and which groups will be able to compete in Nationals (based on dancer participation) in the Winter of 2010. We will need a final headcount by January 31st, 2010. National Entry Fees and summer tuition for rehearsals leading up to Nationals will be collected separately in spring 2010 based on participation.
Competition Dance Shoes:
We will let our competition team members know what color and style of shoe they need for each class by October 15th. This will be determined once competition team auditions are held and costume/music choices are finalized for each group. These shoes may only be worn for competition practices and at the competitions. Only exception is for the black/white tap shoes.
Competition Costumes:
We will let our competition team members know what costumes will be worn for each dance by October 15th. Most of our team costumes are made by Wanda. If you are a solo dancer please understand the group costumes are a huge undertaking. Please have all solo dance costumes to Wanda by August 31st.
Stoning on Competition Costumes:
Each parent will be responsible to the stoning of their competition costs. Each costume will be provided with a stone design and we ask that all stoning is complete for the Competition Showcase on Jan. 9th, 2010
As time allows Ms. Suzanne will be offering to stones costumes for a fee of per gross of stones. Please make sure you communicate directly with her on this and plan ahead so all costumes are ready for Jan. 9th.
Competition Showcase Performance:
January 9th, 2010 will be our Showcase Performance at the Hazel Kinder Theatre.
Solos/Duos/Trios:
All solos/duos/trios need to be approved by Ms.Whitney or Ms. Suzanne. All soloists need to have competed in dance for 2 years at a minimum. The Academy Bill needs to be paid in full at the time of registration. A minimum of a 30-minute private per week needs to be taken for each dance solo/duo/trio competing in.
